  • Summary
    • The article talked about a study the authors made at DeVry campus. The purpose of the study was to see what, if any, changes online learning has on the performance of the students. They calculate the average GPA and grade for the students who took a class online and compared the grades to those who took the same class in a more traditional environment.
  • Authors
    • All of the authors are Stanford university graduates or are associate professors at Harvard . They have spent years learning about various education methods, including online and traditional learning. The paper was published under the guidance of Stanford university and was also peer reviewed.

  • Key terms/consept
    • Restrictive access: online classes have limited ways the students and professors can interact with one another or with other students.
    • Online learning environment: the area in which the students are learning in
    • Three Quotes.
      • "the local average treatment effect on achievement is a 0.2 grade point drop in course grade, approximately a 0.15 standard deviation decline. Put differently, complier students taking thecourse in-person earned a grade of 2.8 on average while their peers in online classes earned agrade of 2.6."(Bettinger, 13)
      • " a 3-7 percentage point drop in the probability of remaining enrolled (or graduating within) one year later. The complier students taking the course in-person had a 70 percent probability of remaining enrolled while their peers in online courses had a 63-67 percent probability."(Bettinger, 13)
      • " we do not find an effect of online teaching on professor performance as measured by student persistence in college. The difference in point estimate s is negative, but not statistically significant." (Bettinger, 16)
    • values
      • The value of the article is the adds is the finding from the study performed. Not only did the study have a large sample size, but it also portrayed the findings of the study in a very easy-to-understand way. I will be using the findings in my paper to show how online learning is noticeably worse for students.
